We like to see ourselves as an online community for current and future TEFL teachers. We share TEFL courses, jobs and resources that we think will be helpful for teachers around the world. The Big TEFL Guide is run by experienced English teachers who have taught face to face and online in 11 different countries. We teach conversational English, young learners, business English, IELTS preparation. Throughout our travel journey, one question we are continuously asked is “how do you afford to travel around the world full-time?” We thought it was time to share exactly how we do it. Teaching English online has changed our lives and we hope to use this platform a community to inspire and support others on their own journey.

This will depend on the job you apply to. Some employers as that you have a degree as part of their requirements but there are many that do not. Check out our list here to find companies that do not require you have a Bachelor’s degree.

There’s no definitive answer to this. Most employers don’t usually ask for a specific qualification as they are all very similar. There may be very slight differences between the courses, but these are usually quite minimal and as such it shouldn’t matter which qualification you pursue.

As a non-native English speaker, you should have an English level of C1 (Advanced) as a minimum.

No, your TEFL certificate never expires. You may want to take refresher course if you’ve been away from the industry for some time. If you decide to pick a specialist area, like ‘Exam Preparation’ or ‘Business English’ then you may decide to take some short courses throughout your career.

Yes! Some students start to apply for jobs while they are enrolled on a course. You’ll find that many employers are willing to hold a position open for once you are qualified.

Absolutely! How much you could earn depends on many factors. Ensure that you are suitably qualified, apply to the top-paying companies, find your own clients so you can set your own rate or a combination of these and you’ll be in a great position to earn well. If you can also live in a low cost of living country then you’ll keep even more of your earnings.

Not at all. You will only ever be expected to speak in English. You will not use the native language of your students at all.
